Double taxation

A client advised me that for years he has been going to America and working there. Then he comes to Israel and spends part of the year here.

He does not speak, read or write Hebrew fluently so he does not make a living in Israel

Every year he has been paying tax on his earnings in America and then declaring his American earnings in Israel and has been exempt from taxation in Israel

However this year he was taxed retrospectively in Israel on what he earned in America

He has to pay $6000 to Betuach Leumi a substantial sum, which of course he does not have

He is literally being forced to leave Israel and remain permanently in the States

I am checking the proceedure of opposing the account and he has consulted an accountant

Retroactive Municipal taxes

I have two pensioners who have received notices from the Iriya Yerushalaim to say that their discount in respect of arnonah has been withdrawn and they have been sent accounts to pay an additional Nis1095

They are in a state of shock and dispondency. The one lady lives well below the poverty line, she has a heart  condition, and goes to the shuk late at night to collect vegetables at a low price. She has free accomodation and she lives on grains

The other lady has pensions from the States but she supports an ill sister and a daughter who cannot fend for herself

So what do we do. The Iryah has printed out a form for pensioners and this must be filled in and returned with supporting  documents and then if the pensioner is indeed indigent the discount will be reinstated

I practice law in Israel so most of my postings will be about Jewish Issues and how they compact with the law either civil law or halachic law

I posted a letter about it on the aliya site and it caused a furore

Unfortunately many Jews who live assimilated lives do not understand the consequences of their actions

I intend to publish a section on Divorce in Israel because this is another mine field

I do not have much space to write on my website so I will make us of weblogs which are a wonderful format

I hope I can be of help to people who need to sort out their lives. I can say that all my litigation clients are people in crisis, at the crossroad of their lives
